Finally,the first public preview !
It's just the beginning,so don't ask too much.

warning: "multitasking" engine !!! (not tested on entry-level machines).
Sound ON !
I need all my friends opinions & sugestions.
(I'm searching for possible bugs)
p.s.
both versions (KoolMoves & Flash MX) are developed at the same time.

LOL.
Looks (almost) just like the real thing!
Pathfinding - the little peasants get foiled too easily by obstacles.
But that is a tough call - I know that pathfinding is a begger of a thing and a good algorythym can rip the ooomph out of a machine.
BTW Necro (Remus?) where are you from and what do you do - if you don't mind a personal question or two.
Owen
Addendum: Sound sometimes goes buzzy, then comes good again.

Owen is the first (as I expected);)
1) about PathFinding ... this is not a bug.
This feature isn't implemented yet (is on my "to do" list).
But don't forget that I can't play with ActionScript as I can play with C++.(I try to avoid Flash HUGE limitations).
2) About myself ...visit my MUSIC section for more details.
3)Sound Buzzy ...this is not a bug.
It happends (sometimes) when is more than one "chopper" (sound multiplied). In a next version I'll put a button for Sound ON/OFF.
thanx

I played warcraft. It is like age of empires I beleive. I let it play on its own for 15 minutes while the workers collected gold and wood. The score kept track of the gold and wood as the workers gathered. The farm did not work for me. There was no problem with sound. I played on a 450 pIII and a 550 amd with no problem or lagging. This is pretty cool.

If you guys like strategic and tactical games, there is a very complex and detailed game (free) at http://www.matrixgames.com/ called SPWAW or Steel Panthers World at War.
This thing goes right down to the ammo left per weapon type per unit. It has hundreds, maybe thousands of scenarios and campaigns, and more being developed by the SPWAW addicts all the time.
Scenario and campaign editors, many nations, attempts realism, good graphics, user community, reasonable AI, multi-player capabilities, also play by email, etc.
SPWAW is a huge (7mb) download and has a learning curve.

Great stuff Necro!
The only issue I saw was if I have all the "workers" doing the same job, they tend to get in each others way and get stuck. They also get stuck behind objects when they have completed a task and you then you have to click on them to get them to move and they drop their logs or gold...
Hee hee... I like it...
Well done.

At this time, the peasants are very dummy.
For them, the unique way is the shortest way.
This is because of the missing "PathFinding" (is on my "to do" list).

After my woodcutters cut down one tree they stop....
Not a huge issue. Just have to restart them on another group of trees.
You know what would be a neat feature to add is a random map generator in which the maps are generated on load- Like Nethack. That would be neat.
A save feature would also be neat. You could do that with a cookie.
Attaching Cookie sample...

for Hilary..
1) At this time KoolMoves version of Warcraft is huge & buggy.
reasons: no "Movie-Library" and no "GetBounds" instruction.
BOB promissed me (and us,of course) a Movie-Library in a future version. If I have a WORKING Movie-Library,you'll have the FUN file from Warcraft !(but NO graphics). Why ?
2)I'm using Blizzard's Characters Graphic Library.
For copyright reasons,I can't give objects from it !
for Johnie
After my woodcutters cut down one tree they stop....
It's true.In the original game (in a lot of cases) they do the same !
Maybe I'll fix this.
a neat feature to add is a random map generator
I hope you realize that I could easy implement a random map,but this is not the point.
The original game has "fixed" maps for each mission.
I wanna respect their work !
Thanks both of you for sugestions and I'm waitin' for more

I like messing with the insides of the computer to much so I keep the K6 around to tinker with.
I'm going to build a Mini ITX out of an old wooden chocolate box I have (10"X13"x3" Balsa Wood). I'm waiting for the EPIA M series http://www.viavpsd.com/product/epia_m_spec.jsp?motherboardId=81 to come out though... They should be out in December and are supose to be 17 CM X 17 CM although I think that may be a mistake as the other Mini ITX boards are 170 cm by 170 cm (6.5" X 6.5"). although if it is to expensive (more than $200) I will just use a EPIA 800.

bad news: the new SwapDepths controller works faster, but the main engine

Great stuff,
I gave it to my 9 year old daughter - she had a great time!
Her comments:
"How do I do this? - how do I do that?" (I think she wants some help screens)
"I lost some of the people - they went into the mine and didn't come out again!" (very upset she was!)
"Can I make time go faster?"
I took a peek at some of your code :) You have done a lot of great work here Necro - well done!
I have a couple of suggestions - I think it would lend itself well to OO Actionscript, and may help you with the speed issue. You could make a person Class and then share methods with say peons, footmen and peasants Classes etc
Also, there are a lot of onClipEvent's which you could probably assign dynamically in an OO structure, or maybe try setInterval which can save you lots of CPU cycles....
This is not a critisism, I think you have done a wonderful job here.
Keep up the great work...

Thanks OWEN ,thanks HILARY
- I used shared Classes
- I used multi-conditioned functions (to save from CPU hard job).
I can't use "setInterval",because the engine needs perfect synchronization between "childs" (I have a lot of "hitTest with getBounds" and must be performed at the same time)
I think I need a miracle to speed up the game ...

Amazing graphics man ! Congratulations.
Also, your XML generated game maps are cool.
Warcraft and Diablo are "on hold" (at least for this year).

If one day you want to push farther the adventure of your warcraft engine, and if you look someone to collaborate with, i can count me in : i would be quite excited to work on a derivation of such a great game, and, for example, some of Two Kingdoms GFXs and tiles could do pretty well in a RTS ... with keeping in the same time that Warcraft II look and feel ...

Actually, we could talk about pathfinding : for enemy AI, Two Kingdoms uses an algorythm that is quite fast, that is not processor intensive, not based on a* (as speed is a big drawback ) but that works really well ... specially when a lot ( meaning 10-20 ) objects (sprites) use it...

But I can't find any "enemies AI" there.
You have few predefined paths (I'm talking about those archers and wolfes) and some "pseudo-random" routines.
Warcraft is based on few "predefined targets" and a real-time PathFinding routine (a little bit buggy,I have to admit that).
But this is not the point.
The new engine is based on a heuristic algorithm (with logical trees),of course, ported on Flash (ActionScript).
I have a lot of improvements for WARCRAFT and DIABLO,but I have no time (maybe next year).
p.s.
I don't wanna upset BOB with these discussions (have nothing to do with KoolMoves),so email me or start a new topic HERE (http://forum.necromanthus.com) (FLASH Games).
cheers

Hummm....don't know if i can be happy about that ... decompiler ? ...
Actually, you might not have them all, or old ones : wolves, archers etc are derivations of an enemy overall class : no predefined at all : the enemy spots the position of the player (if in line of sight), then does the pathfinding to that position - to avoid having perfect pathfinding, i update the pathfinding according to the line of sight, and a timer which basicly sets the intelligence/reactivity of the enemy... so it is a "real" pathfinding, only that it is not constant ( but could be )
I must stressed that eventhough i commited a lot of the code on 2K, i've worked with an OOP coder lately that reprogrammed a lot of the engine lately ...
PS -> To the mod : sorry for hijacking the thread : i subscribed to Necro forums, just waiting for the confirmation ...

There's no need to wait for that.

I'll try to speed up the game, but is VERY difficult (Flash ActionScript is not the best environment for sophisticated engines).
archers and knights are on my "to do" list (next year).

Kudos! This is my favorite Warcraft version, so anything I can contribute (actionscript arena, not graphics I'm afraid) I'm game... Anyway, I'm playing without speakers, so I don't know if you have sound or not (I think I saw a note about "choppy sound") but when I went up to attack the orcish base with my little footsoldier, I noticed the orcs didn't falter a bit when they're hut caught on fire. I tried to rile up some support from the orcish rank by yelling, "We're being attacked!" in my best grunt voice, but to no avail. Please implement support for pitiful classic game lovers and their silly voices. ;)

Also, hi. You could say I'm the epitome of the concept "forum lurker." Joined Aug 1 2003. First post Feb 20 2004. Really enjoy listening to your banter. Wouldn't be able to do the measly things I do in Flash weren't for you guys (and gals) helping me without knowing it.

Hello there.
What can I say ... to be honest,I don't know the future of this flash game.
Flash environment is not suitable for this kind of projects.
The swapDepths engine is a game killer (there's nothing I can do about that).
About sounds ... I don't know who said something about "choppy sound" because there're no choppy sounds at all.
The main problem is that to get a decent FrameRate (>24 FPS),you need a top system (processor > 1.6GHz and at least 256MB RAM).
Now about "I noticed the orcs didn't falter a bit when they're hut caught on fire" ... of course: they're too dummies to do something else.
On my "to do" list are archers and knights, but to do that I have to rebuild the entire engine.
I can't predict any date for that, because the current project is out of Flash: NecroShock (http://necromanthus.com/Games/ShockWave/NecroShock.html)
Anyway,I'll keep you in touch.

I agree.
But to add archers, knights and more trees, I need more computing power !
And Flash is not able to give me that ...

Finally,the first public preview !
It's just the beginning,so don't ask too much.
http://necromanthus.com/Games/Flash/warcraft.html
warning: "multitasking" engine !!! (not tested on entry-level machines).
Sound ON !
I need all my friends opinions & sugestions.
(I'm searching for possible bugs)
p.s.
both versions (KoolMoves & Flash MX) are developed at the same time.
cheers
:mrpimp:
I would appreciate it if you please add more trees for the goblins i never get enough for finishing the first mission :)

Check out this TOPIC (http://forum.necromanthus.com/necroforum.php?forum=4&topic=1)
This project is dead for a long time ago.
As I said many times before, flash environment (because of its poor global performances) is not suitable for sophisticated projects.
To continue this project I need a (much more) faster environment.
Flash v8.5 is far away from my expectations, so you have to wait for v9, v10, or ... who knows.
Meanwhile, this is the "real" Warcraft in your browser:

new features are coming soon ...

More than 3 years ago...
It was a project to see if he could do it.
An experimental level, if you will.
I figure if Necro says he can't do it and has not added anything in two years,
then maybe, just maybe, it will NOT be updated anytime soon.
I have played more incomplete homebrew games than complete market games.
When ya play with an experiment don't expect much.

It's looking good. i just wish i had the patience (and the knowledge) to be able to do something like this. obviously i can see there is a lot more work that needs doing but it's looking like it could be an excellent peice of work, keep up the good work.

Necromanthus, you should add more levels
I have to think about that.
In fact, I have to rebuild the entire game because the engine core is flash v5 :yikes:
to docree: good point of view !
to mook25: The Flash version of Warcraft can't be compared with the ShockWave version.
The second one is much more complicated (and it's full 3D !).
to gusmus: Warcraft is the best RTS ever made.
