1. Is there any tutorial out there for complete beginners? I've looked at all the links from the help pages, but I'm finding it difficult to get started.
2. I'd like to create a fairly simple opening page for my site, using one of the text effects templates, followed by a "click here to enter" button, but can't figure out how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

Look at the tutorials on the support page.
Look at the section in the Help called Links, Buttons, and Symbols.
Look at the example fun files in the Examples/Action folder that comes with the product.
Basically add text, say that the text is a button in the properties popup, add a geturl button action to the button also in the properties popup.

Thanks Bob,
Another question if I can.
I've worked out that I can combine two text effects in the same way, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make the background from the second one transparent to keep the text from the first one on screen once the second starts - ie company name runs first, and then stays on screen while the web address runs

Start in frame one, add your text effect with the Company Name, (this will add additional frames to your movie), go to the last frame, add two more frames, then start the new text effect with the Company Web Address. (If you want to add an Enter button in the same way, add two more frames and do the same, making the new text into a button.) Add a Stop Movie effect at the end of the movie to keep the movie from looping and keep it on screen to give viewers time to click on the button.

You could just add the second effect and then go back to the last frame your other text was in, select it, and then paste it into the new frames.
The way the Text effects work is that they place text shapes and other shapes (If you have custom text effects) into the KM Movie. Once placed into the Movie you can manipulate them just like any other shapes.
