A kid over in the Open SWF board has to write a paper on the history of the Open SWF Format and since Bob was one of the people who were listed as helping develope the Open SWF.Org documentation and I found the archive of the mail group where Bob, Dave Michie (One of the creators of Swish), and Oliver Debon (Creater of Swift Generator and other Tools) are discussing the SWF format (the link is here: http://www.egroups.com/messages/swiff-info/ ) that would be some good info for him too.
I Know it has been posted before but I couldn't find the thread. If Anyone remembers that thread or if Bob can repost it It would be some pretty good Info.
Oh yeah we got some insight from the Swish Team also- It is interesting stuff

I will happily say it again.
First off, my contribution to David Michie's open swf work was fairly minor because I came late in that work. I benefited from a lot of hard work by others, mainly David and Olivier Debon.
In the '98 time frame, Richard Ward asked me and asked a mutual friend who runs Animation Online if either of us would develop an easy to use application that would create Flash movies. For years Richard was using a DOS application to teach animation to children, called FantaVision created by Scott Anderson, a pioneer in that field. Richard wanted to be able to create animations for the internet. Neither of us were interested at that time. In March '99, I suddenly consented to undertake the project and we released our first version in April 2000. From the onset, the guiding design principle for the application has been ease of use and that guiding principle will continue.

The history of Swish was very interesting reading. Thanks Johnie for requesting that.

David it started in this link and we posted here and and in the swish forum.
I was thinking while we're at it we might ask Oliver Debon also. Any input would be welcome.
