I've received similar messages, just like this one, popping up from nowhere in the middle of the screen, looking just like Windows alerts, but with spam as the text.
Does anyone know how they're doing this, 'cause I'd sure like to put an end to it?

we just use a time delayed javascript and a chromeless window... them fancy guys use dhtml and such
the ones that still get me are the chat windows that are ads.. sometimes they get me

I had one of these pop up on me. I was quite p.oed. I thought to myself, what if it were a porn site and my kid was on the computer?

It has both a pop-up control feature and no chromeless windows. What sickens me is that people argue that IE can do this as a feature on why IE is superior... Superior only to the spammers out there as it has limited real value to the end user.

We're going to visit a prospect tomorrow, and as one of the qualifying questions, we ask if they have sites that they like, so perhaps we can get an idea of what they're looking for, if we can do it, how much to bid for the same etc. It's a Japanese company, so they surf .jp a lot (there's a lot of Japanese-origin people in Sao Paulo - it's portuguese, UTS - I think it's the next-largest Japanese population outside of Japan itself)
What am I gonna do to get rid of this darn script? Although I reckon losing IE'd be a great idea, I really need to use it as 90% or quite possibly more of the people we talk to use this browser - to use something else could just raise a whole boatload of questions. (What's that?, should I use that?, Why is it different? etc).
I ran Norton too, but how's that gonna determine if a script is bad or not? - if only it was that good.
You can disable Javascript inside IE-- If you are pitching a SWF site or SVG site it won't matter as both SWF and SVG players have native scripting engines.
Hi johnie - How can I disable Javascript in IE and still see the same when I'm surfing? Sounds like cutting off my leg so my toes don't itch (of course, the severity of the itch gets worse when one of these lame popups decides to rear its ugly head)
For example, there's no way to trace back to the originating code source, whereever it's lurking on my hd, is there? (a long shot - but maybe??)

1. Click the Explorer menu
2. Click Preferences.
3. Let Web Browser display all its items
4. Click Web Content.
5. In the Active Content area clear the Enable scripting check box.
6. Press OK
In older versions you went under tools and disabled scripting. There are actually numerous Jscript exploits sol turning it off for sights you don't explicitly trust is a good thing :)
Likewise switching to Mozilla- a good thing.
Aw man, I might come across as a simple greenhorn, but I can turn off Javascript in my browser (but thanks for the walk-through :D).
I'm still going to try and find where this offending script is on my hd and gleefully delete it's days-are-numbered butt.

It could be anywhere... Netzero and several other progries hide scripts like that.
Get a good firewall like Tiny firewall and lock down your system untill it tries to do its work and you can nail it down that way.
Does the firewall work because the script now living rent-free on my hd needs an external trigger? I have Norton installed, but that didn't notice anything out of the ordinary -Quote:

I was under the impression that this ia a self-contained package that worked on a timer?
