The idea may seem silly to some.. but if I have to look at them 20hrs a day for the next year... can ya blame me?!....

Didn't fully understand you, so, only draw a few samples with different colors and textures of that gray bar behind the logos, just that? If so, then my advice is that no textures will look good on those, as glossiness is what looks best (e.g. Windows 7 Taskbar)
