flash and shockwave?? wat is the diference in the 2

hey ive wondered for quite sum time now
wats the difference with flash and shockwave??which 1s more effective?which 1s easier??
i just dont get it? i have no idea about shockwave. sumbody educate me

Shockwave as a name has taken on several incarnations. The first was with Director. When Flash came out they had Shockwave for Flash. Now they have gone back and made Shockwave a Director term and Now have Flash Player. They are both streaming solutions. Until just a few weeks ago I was convinced that Director was DOA (dead on arriaval) But with the release of 8 it looks to be a player in the broad band future. The new Director stage will scale of the web. No longer are you stuck with a set stage size. So Flash looks like it will be playing a diffrent roll that I had earlier posted if you read it. If you are looking for where streaming rich media is going you may want to investigate the new living stage pro by http://www.totallyhip.com it is a quicktime authoring tool. It's going to be a race between Director and QT in a few months for who will be BB King. both can use Flash as a wired asset. Hope that helps, Regards, Bill

so basically shockwave is an authoring tool too rite? sorta like flash. but the concepts are basically the saem that is vector animations for broadband and they are made by the same company macromedia so where does the diference lie?? which wud be a better tool in the future? is shockwave more impactful?and is there any text animator tool like swish but that can be available for free on the net???

A Director lic is around $1000.00 US. You can use your flash files in Director as Sprites. The Big difference is that Shockwave is for Director. And Director is much more robust and can handel things like video right in the program. Shockwave was an after thought for Director, Meaning Director had been around for a few years. Flash was developed for online delivery from the start. The difference between them is the internal handeling and execution of the files. Like in Director you have things called extras that have to be present loacated in an external file inorder to run. The player has to deal with this and other problems. Regards, Bill

Flash is definatly the tool of choice round these parts, but I wonder how many flash peeps have used other packages (such as director)?

It is really an amazing bit of kit! But I think it is more for offline programs or atleast broadband net use!

Flash is definatly the current king of the net but what does the future hold?

well i myself havent used director and im thinkin of givin it a try but i sorta got my hands full with tryin to learn actionscripts( which i mite add, i have no idea how to do ).
im mainly intrested in making movies for websites. so for rite now i think flash is just rite for me. but no doubt sumwhere in the near future it wud be nice for me to try out all the tools possible.its good to have a larger horizon of knowledge. hey and on a different note how do u think i could learn actionscripts? ive downloaded fla files and tried to figure them out but i just dont get it. if u know of ne online free tutorials please do let me know.

I know the feeling! Action scripts can be a right ***** to get your head around!

Director is much easier to code in. Its more like traditional programming window than the weird pull down menu's business of Flash4.

Flash Actionscripts are quite easy to understand but not very easy to input... if that makes any sense! :¬)

Anyway Director cost sooooow much money its out of reach for most of us normal plebs! But if you are lucky like me and are at uni you get to play with it for freeeeee! :¬)

Although I'm just really getting in to actionscripts and stuff I do find that pulling apart other peoples work really does help... like your balloon thing flashy_g!

I would also reccomend the Flash4 Magic book... if anything else it looks damn sexy! :¬) The examples are clear and easy to understand so go and buy it! :¬)

I agree that entering Actionscripts (especially big ones) is a total pain. I use a tool called FAST! which at $25 was a good buy. I do however resent having to spend money on soemthing that should be a basic part of Flash in the first place.

Well, I have to say that the package I learned first was Director. Yuck... I can use it pretty well now, but Flash is a lot easier to use. Director Lingo is pretty hard to learn. Definetly not like action scripting! I've used Director for 2 years and Flash for about 2 months, and I'd say my skills in both are about equal now. Flash is definetly my choice.

thanx a lot for the help . ive downloaded a lot of fla files from flashkit so i guess im gonna sit and try and figure actionscripts myself. going to be hard but guess i gotta do it. and as for the books i dont know if theyll be available here . im going to go hunting for the book anyways. i live in india and flash is just about gettin popular here so not too many books out i guess but....wish me luck.
