There is this famous American artist whose name I always forget. I think his work is from the 60s or 70s.
His most famous piece is a painting of a swimming pool, and the deck. I think all his works are based in California setting. His style is very similar to Illustrator type art, though it was done decades ago.
Anyone remember? Or am I being too vague?

Okay I just realized his name is David Hockney.
And his work is nothing close to Illustrator. :rolleyes:

yeah that dood is like really cool and stuff.
the had a interview with him on 60 minutes and he said that like all the paintings in the (forgive my spelling) ren-oh-saw-nce were all traced using optics! imagine that? that dood is kewl and im gonna order his book.

The idea of tracing images using optics was developed in the renaissance - da vinci had a 'box of mirrors' (although its purpose is not really known). It wasn't until much later in history when artists such as Jan Vermeer utilised the camera obscura.
This all came about because of the artists' quest for realism in their work. The camera obscura became a novelty plaything for the upper classes during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The birth of photography (about 150 years ago) compelled some artist to leave realism behind - being unable to challenge the realism of a photograph. This is when the Impressionist movement came about, allowing artists to create far more abstract interpretations of the world around them.
That concludes todays art history lesson. :)
