I am trying to get an AIR certificate. While all the paperwork is ok, the certifying company is asking me as a final step to register with DUNS and get a number. Before that they also said yellow pages would be ok. DUNS is asking for $299, although on their website one can sign up for free but have to wait a month for the number. The main purpose is to confirm my phone number. Any experience with that or suggestions?

We went the "free" route where you have to wait a month for the DUNS number and we're still waiting, almost 1 month and 2 weeks later. Good luck man!
I am also still waiting for the free number. However, I complained to the company issuing the certificates and they recommended that I can also sign up with Superpages or Yellowpages instead. I did that and that was free of charge, when you want to be only in the very local search engine and immediately done.
I got my DUNNS number today and that is exactly 1 month after I asked for it.
