I'm not gonna rate the site.....it's one of those "so new media, you don't even know where/what the navigation is/means/does." dealios...
Very confusing....
do you really think so ?
well, I think its totally great
come on man, let me see you rate it - i'd love to see what you'd give it
then i could measure that up against what it got elsewhere
please

aaronmartone.com website review™
Interactivity_: 2
Originality...: 7
Flash Skill___: 7
Graphics......: 7
Content_______: 1
Sound.........: 5
Theme_________: 6
Pros : graphics are nice and sharp, music is very fitting to the theme. As with these xs new media sites, the originality is rather unique.
Cons : extremely difficult navigation system, never knowing where I should/could click. Content seems to be very lacking and not what I expected for where/what I clicked.
Overall.......: 5
thanks
the site got a 8.6 from communication arts magazine
and is a top rated linkdup.com site
just thought i'd let you know
bye
...you know, I think a lot of people are taking offense to my rating of their website based on a 1-10 scale in different sections......
The biggest misconception has been that they think 1 means it's bad and 10 means it's good. But in fact, 5 is good, anything above is excellent and anything below means it needs improvement.
Now, I will admit, that I'm a perfectionist (I dont know if that's a blessing or a curse), but it seems a lotta people are taking my reviews to heart.....
Fact is, I'm just a web developer! though my reviews may be "well known" just by their preformatted output and what not, I'm no different than the schmoe who just says "Looks good" or "d00d, yor syte suxxor!".... Being that perfectionist, I just wanted a neat looking summary of my findings....
Overall, the 5 means the site is good, very much so worth a visit and bookmark. I come to expect that some people may like it more, some may like it less; that makes us all human. They gave you a 8.6, so that should be of value to you as well;
But so many people are taking my reviews as some kind of official, corporate review (it's not!).....just take it as one person's opinion.....and congrats on the 8.6...I gave websites like ConspiracyGames.com a 9.0
Then, change your rating style to version 2, where all the rating scores are doubled. At least, 10 seems better than 5. :)
As for the site, it was pure eyecandy. No single usability. Inspiring, it can be, but it's not very keen on non-designers. I don't think normal users would have known where to go, let alone advance to one of your links.
However, that can be kept to show off
telling it like it is
that's what i like
I like theses sites, i makes you explore the site more, searching for links and discovering flash eyecandy. I can understand why somepepole don't though
yeah, me too
I love sites like this
It makes you think and it makes you wanna play with it
Lets not forget how much it inspires a real designer especially if you are into new media
loads quickly
good design
creative use of flash
---------------------
bad navigation
lacks originality
attention to detail and quality is missing
overall very confusing and the design distracts from the point of the site
i give it a 3.5
but then again, opinions are worthless.
surely not my opinion? :(
wow...i love the site.
there're many cool interfaces/background, transitions really smooth too. Good post!
I agree with ctranter. The site's target audience is the designer who is familiar with this type of obscure navigation and, more importantly, feels like uncovering the hidden facets of the site. Sometimes I am, most times I'm too busy to try. At the same time, it's refreshing to see sites like this that make you think differently and present "content" in a different light.Quote:

i love aaron matone reviews as it is...
its outstanding:D
(cuz... he review it by what he believed on)
Heh heh heh. I'm gettin praise AND flak from a lotta people on my reviews. When they say "I like them! You can tell it's an AM review by the preformatted output and that recognizable logo.", I'm like "Thanks!"Quote:

But then you have others goin "What right do you have giving that website a [value] for [area] !?!? As if you could do any better!" ANd to them I say, "CRIPES! It's an OPINION!!! Sheesh! Everyone's entitled to one; mine are just rather mathematical!"
:smoov:
Execellent site!
yeah, told all you cynics out there - this site kicks as s :)
aaron is correct, the site has ok graphics, but navigation is terrible, and when designing a website where people will go and look at things, navigation is the most important aspect of web design. Then comes the other stuff, graphics, sound etc. It's nice, but not anything new or jaw dropping...
what nonsense, pollen has not been designed for you to have a brainless navigation experience, the site is experimental.
You need to appreciate a sites for reasons they have been developed, not crititise them on some unwritten law that says your navigation needs to be designed like this or that.
The reason the site is good is because it's fresh and designed well, you can see the individual who designed the site has skill and experience. Some of the graphics are done in a popular style, but that's no why I think the site is good. It's good because it's done well.
A person might use a font or colour I personally hate, but if it's used well and designed well then you don't see the colors or your personal preferences, you see the time and effort and a good layout and what works and what does not.
i'm not saying the site is designed badly, but the navigation is and don't tell me that it is not, if it is an experimental site, than that's fine, but if you want regular people to come and visit your site, they need to easily be able to find the buttons.
graphically the site is great, but navigation sucks IF it is a regular and not an experimental site
it's clearly experimental, the graphics are over the top, he or she is just playing with shapes and colours and going mad.
like I said appreciate the site for what it is.
the only bad crit I do have is that some of the movements are really sucking porcessor, but again if I had a super computer I would not feel it.
aftereden.
You sound like you're handing out opinions to everyone but not letting people have their own opinions. If someone hates something, for ANY reason whatsoever (as contrary as it sounds to you), he/she is entitled fully to that opinion and to express that opinion.
In fact, that's what forums are for. What use is a place in which we all just pointed out the good? I'm all for tact and what not, but I won't deny someone their opinion if they want to be brutally honest.
The only time I step in is if someone is literally insulting someone else (unless the initial person ripped an item from someone else; then they deserve all the fires a flamewar brings to the table)
well, I am just giving my opinion. and enjoying the discussion.
I like it as a portfolio piece. But that is what it is so nice work. It was definitely inspirational considering Im pretty much of an amatuer web designer. I know how to do almost anything in flash or I feel I could figure it out but I have problems when it comes to putting my ideas together. This site was definitely inspirational.
hi
well, i'm glad the site has caused so much discussion.
i'd always known that it might or rather hoped that it would.
i'm glad some people can identify with what has been done here, and some can't.
pollen was created as a showcase for graeme carr's design ability and what he has a passion for - visual communication. some people might relate and others not. personally i think it's an insight into graeme's mind and thoughts.
sure, the site's experimental, wacky, cutting edge, the navigation's not 'in your face' - but that's what he wanted, some exploration, some playfullness, something different.
lets just appreciate what HE stands for. simple.
cheers
Agreed. It's all about individuality.
I think its nice and fresh!
