if you want a transparent background... you would have to load the external .swf into another .swf...
use loadmovie"external.swf","_root.body.emptyclip"on you main swf in the frame you want......

if your talking about a regular graphic, jpg or gif,... you can select imag=> break apart=> then select the part of the image you want to delete or eraser tool... next when you finish that just group...
