How about making the gradients look like a transparent glow..

I am assuming that glow is a gradient with the alpha...

I am importing clear gifs made from Illustrator and getting white pixels around the artwork when imported into MX..over a color background..

The child movie looks fine, when it loads...

Not to threadjack, but I am doing the same thing, and my child movies are really washed out when they load into the parent. I am doing a photography site and the loaded photos are really light...
