You have to create the image in AI. It won't do to have a photoshop image saved as an AI file as that won't import into Max.
( I save my Illustrator files as AI version 9.0 and it works fine for me )

The easiest way is to make a circle in the lathe editor - away from the centre as the arc of the bend determines and then adjust the sweep angle to the amount of bend you require.

the file is 254Kb in size - seems really big for such a small movie content....

It is not swift causing the prob from what I see.
My guess is it is the way you have actioned within flash.
It is a simple static vector image - it shouldn't cause lag.
