even if you have 384 mb RAM, flash can't use it if you don't assign more of it to flash.
if you're on mac, find the flash application's icon, then file --> get info, or commend - i....

As far as I know, the mask layer can only recognize one shape, i.e. one grouped or ungrouped shape, a graphic symbol, or a movieclip....
