It's all a balance between quality and size. What do you use to edit bitmaps? Photoshop? There's all kinds of options in there for optimizing file size... use 'save for web' and mess with the options...

have you tried loadVariables? You can place that on the first frame of your movie, load your txt file, and then use the variables in there.... you can get the details in the flash help pages...
