I grab screen res with java script and use it in the embed tags to scale a base movie. Since I don't want to scale the external loaded content I scale that as needed back to the orig. size.

Never Mind-- Problem was I had to test on-line. I am attaching the movie clips hold1, hold2 etc. It's probably my preload code that's interfering.

We usually don't display countdown as numbers anyway but as some animation which can relate to time. Anyway the client makes that decision.

A smart buffer is what you need.
You should check users bandwidth to calculate the buffer time. 20MB is pretty large but bit rate is what you are looking, for so think playtime.
