Knock the background out with a mask, and before ya flatten the image, give the mask a little bit of Gaussian Blur.

the font on web creations on the 2nd link is more modern - as for the images there is little in it (I'm on 1280x1024 screen res) but again, the 2nd link looks cleaner - which is ironic as the 2nd...

Illustrator has a funky graph creating plug-in.
You can import native illustrator (.ai) files into Flash.
From Flash, export to .swf.
Voila!
