The fonts on dafont usually ARE free. But it's good that you check to make sure. What i'd recommend:
-Open the font file by double-clicking on it
-Look in the font information, it will usually say...

Most pixel fonts work at 8pt only, but that doesn't mean that they are all the same size. Take a look, for example at these 3 fonts:
antenna8
antenna10
antenna11
all 3 of them work at 8pt, but...

if it's only for web/flash use, go for truetype, its easier

I suspect the fonts you are trying to use are bitmap fonts. You need fonts that actually have an outline, truetype or type 1 (postscript) fonts.

are you using embedded fonts? device fonts?
