well if you export and it gets pixly- it means that illustrator already converted for you to a bitmap (like PNG). The resolution however depends on your document DPI settings- so if you increase that number the resolution will increase -> but for screen work better export as PNG just like you said.
Meshing in Illustrator is not a gradient,- it´s rather a propritary technology by illustrator that causes many designers headaches because the other well known apllications can´t handle it (inDesign does but that´s a different story)
hopefully this can be worked out in the next release of flash...
