Flash CTF - Game in Progress looking for input
I am working on a new game of the CTF variety.

looking for some input and constructive criticism

....he's amazing!!!
It's a great start. Though the graphics/animation need some work.
It's very much like soldat. If you add some particle effects and a few explosions it'll be sweet.

thanks, the graphics are a problem, im a programmer not a animator or an artist.

Is the friendly AI done yet? If so, I think it might be problematic. I was running behind my AI friend and he didn't grab the flag, he just stopped right in front of it and started running the other way without the flag. I had to grab it myself.
Other than that, the core seems pretty good. I personally would like to see a minimap and possibly some maps with alternate routes. Additional weapons for variety is always good of course. The controls scream 'jetpack' to me as well.
Great start though!

that doesn´t mean you could not put a little bit more effort into it
but it does look already promesing,- just pick a propper font, add some nice textures and some nicer characters and you have a very nice game.
-
i had a jetpack before but then i took it out, i guess i could add it again without issue.
and the AI still needs a lot of work
texturing is probably one of the harder things for me, i cant stop it from looking so repetitive.

hey that´s a great result - defenitly the right direction if you ask me. is it still useable in filsize?
Just some ideas on keeping a smal filesize from me:
- tiled textures in flash vector shapes,- wont give you the soft gras overlay but as base
- create some blend textures of the gras thingy like a horizontal rectangle with radial gradient mask and instanciate that a few times
-
the file is still usable, i have been creating a simple collision layer that is all back. Then there is the overlay, all this has been done in the gimp.
-
oh,- you dont have access to PS,-
I created this earlier, I guess I dont need additional text- since you are already familar with image editing
(the red background in the first part is just to better visualize transparency,- kinda gets lost with the checker texture from PS)
this is what I meant,- earlier to archive tiny filesizes in flash,- while still offering variety
-
i see, i do have PS but i prefer gimp on my linux box, photoshop is a bit unstable.
-
for the characters, should i also texture them?
-
if I were working on this perhaps first some prop sprites like fences, flags, bridges, clouds, plants/ flowers just things that make it a little bit more lively. Again you could import them as PNG and instanciate them trough the use of either graphics or MOiveClips in flash.
The characters,- depend on how you want it. If you animate within flash some of the legs and arms perhaps some bitmap arms and legs and rest of the body parts. THe con however sometimes is that rotated bitmaps in Flash dont always look smooth,- it sometimes results into aliasing artifacts.
Some people use a primitive 3d application such as poser to pose a existing character and animate it,- render it as PNG and import it back to flash. SO the character animation would be a rendered sequence. The con: looks stiff and not integrated into the gameplay usually.
The thing I dont usually like about flash vector graphics in games is that they were made quick and without much care ,- its the quickest way in fact for most flash users.
But the xtra effort like using a different tool,- spending more times drawing them in flash or simply trying to think outside the box is what makes it different in the end from other games.
maybe you have some reference pics of what you´d like to archive?

i dont have any particular pics i am working from, just building on ideas i come up with, the original idea came from playing soldat.
I have also updated the pic:

Personally I think this new concept pic looks really nice

Now tell me whos watchin......
the only thing that sorta cheapens it is the wood texture. But good job on the game.
-
yeah, im still looking for the right texture for that.

When you click play there is a few seconds of lag while flash loads everything, how can i make it so the game does not start until everything is loaded?
-
by creating a preloader?
just add this code to the first frame:
PHP Code:
stop();//stop on this first frame
_root.onEnterFrame = function(){
var a = _root.getBytesLoaded();
var b = _root.getBytesTotal();
if (a == b && int(b)>0){//done loading all content of the flash container
delete _root.onEnterFrame;
play();//start the movie
}
}
and let your game start at the 2nd frame
-
thats how it is now, is after click the start button that there is a few seconds of lag, that or my current preloader is not working.
