variable from main timeline to MC

Is it possible to set Tell Target function to use variable from main timeline. What i want to do is:
1. Set variable in main timeline
2. Using Tell Target go to #frame in Movie Clip that was set by variable in main timeline.
I know know how to set variable in MC that goes to main timeline. Is it possible to do other way?

in the movieclips actions put "_root." in front of wherever the variable is used.
