!!!Mute button across scenes!!!

Hi there here is an example of what I'd like to achieve:
I've got 2 scenes each containing 1 sound and 1 mute button.The two mute buttons work fine independently,but I want that when the first button is clicked (then the sound in scene1 is muted)the second sound in scene2 also stay muted.If the button play was reclicked during scene1 however(to put the sound back on), the sound in scene2 would play normally.I've tried to define some variables but I can't get it to work.I've tried plenty of things,variables,unload movie,tell target etc... without success.
This is for Flash4
