Argh... i'm soo depressed right now. An .fla i put up on flashkit was taken and destroyed. This "person" took my movie, changed a couple things (made it UGLY) and kept my name on it too! Didnt' even ask me to use it which i asked people to do if they use it. Can't help people these days. They just stab you in the back. Funny thing is, the skip intro button still goes to my old http://www.riceraver.com site! I dunno what to do. I don't think I can take any legal action since I did post the source for people to take.

I don't feel like doing anything dealing with flash or webpage anymore. This is the only place I could turn to. Except... i dunno.

Can you post a link to this ruined .fla so we can see what exactly this travesty is?

The only real thing you could do is to get the person to edit the .fla properly, but since you posted it as open source I guess they can do what they want with it. Thats the risk you run I guess....

That link is your old site?

    It looks nice....

I say send him an e-mail and see if he will change it. At least have him change the links.

Don't sweat it, if they are stealing your work that means they think its worth stealing... In fact I would be worried if nobody stold my work... not the other way around.

I'm not sure what restrictions are placed on work submitted to Flashkit- E-mail Steve or Trav and see if there is any recourse or if by submitting the work you are placing it as fair game.

I would post it but I am currently in contact with the person that showed me the site. Funny thing is that the person who informed me of the site has the exact same name for their email address... I'm trying to clarify everything at the moment. Plus, the site that it redirects to at the end of my intro doesn't have any email correspondence available for some reason SO i have no way o contacting them, except by long distance phone which i will pay to do so.

Ouch, Rice, where is this ripoff? (though you probably don't want anyone seeing it) It's always hard when something of yours gets stolen especially when you put it out there to help people and they steal it.

At least you know if they aren't smart enough how to remove your name you know darn well they will never ammount to anything and you don't have to worry about them as competition.

    Exactly UpNorth!!!

I was hoping that it would help others like some of the .flas here have helped me...my way of giving back sorta. But noooooooooo, people are greedy, lazy, idiots, etc...

It just bums me out. yeah... i guess i should be honored that people would WANT to steal my work but.... they could at least ask? That's all I really want. Maybe a little credit on what I did and what they changed you know? Money would have been even better!

What makes me feel even cheaper is that it was stolen from a "webdesign" company. They charge $75 for a flash intro! Is that what my work is worth??????!!?? Then at LEAST send me $75!!!! ugh..

Its not really about the competition. I love competition. But it makes me feel used... cheap that something like this happened. I see it all the time now. Little kids and in this case, even adults see the internet as complete freedom to take whatever they choose and use it as their own.

OH YEAH!!! Another thing, i used a quote from an author, Cathy Better, and they changed the name on that too!!! They said that they made that quote... If anything, I could contact that author, if they are alive, and have them take legal action right?

Too True Rice. Makes me think back to the Warez thread running around the board today as well. Same morals in play. Make me even wonder if $75 "Design" firm is using "Free" software.

this aint right, man, it's just not right... especially if it's a webdesign company... well, it would suck to be them... man, for what it's worth, we're behind you, and do whatever you think it would help...

Yes... it isn't just me. It could be you next. 'rips' are becoming as common as porn sites these days. Anything on the web is free game. So sad...

I still want to know why the people at this 'webdesign' company don't even have an email address....

Its not the software that you use. I could make a very nice site, right now using ALL free software and hosting, all from stracth. Its the Skills that you have. Apperently some who would steal a whole Flash intro don't have too many skills!

lol... that means that they are illiterate as well... thought you wrote it or someone who might be able to be put in relation with you... again, it would suck to be them...

I was looking in a java script directory and found a script to take off the "save image as" option. Instead of annoying right clicks, you need to protect your site, just as you would lock up your house. Its the same exact thing as someone breaking into your house and taking all of your stuff, you have to protect it!

hey, what about some flashkit? what could they do about this? have you tried to contact their legal staff? i read on one of the threads that they will go as far as contacting people that are in direct violation of their rules - true that it had to do with banned members who were trying to sign in with a new profile. but i think this is even worse than that...

Was thinking ahead of my fingers. By free I meant that it possibly was free to them, just like Rice's hard work was free to them. People who have no morals to steal something created by an individual would certainly have no problem stealing something from a company like Macromedia.

Almost makes me wish somehow Macromedia could protect flash better from warezing as people willing to rip them off are just as likely to rip off our work as designer/developers

Well, unless the person has the accual FLA to download (as in riceravers case) then it would be almost impossible to steal a movie from someone. wouldnt it? or is there a way to take the SWF also?

I bought flash, i work hard to do well in flash, then i get ripped off. GO figure.

Do you really need to use warez to get a program? I know there is another thread about this but the only plus to warez is a 'trial'.

Like someone said in that thread, there's a lot of discounts that you can get. I bought flash for $100 with an educational discount. Yes, i'm using flash 4. Don't need to buy flash 5 because i'm not that actionscript oriented. I COULD download the new version but why bother. Doesn't it make you feel better if you create something with something you buy?

At least BUY my intro. I'll be happy to give it to ya for
free even. Just tell me about it first!

oh well... just dissapointed, and saddened.

hey, it's not even the software part that is annoying here... just like most of us, i think james (riceraver) has invested countless hours in learning more about flash and design. and there comes some idiot that makes his efforts useless by making his (james's) work his own. and that's the idiot part. i admit the fact that, before i knew i wanted to make a career out of flash, i have downloaded the trial version (etc) but once i started geeting payed for it, bought it. but flash is only the means to the end. it is riceraver's integrity at play here and how many of us won't think twice before actually uploading an .fla on flashkit or any other site?
