Help me! I need some ideas! I'm making a webpage for an outdoorsman foundation and i need an idea for navigation. I really like the xbox idea for this site, but of course im not gonna copy it. I have a khaki/beige background and i wanted to use maybe a navy color for the nav. HELP ME!!!

you don't have to copy it directly...

you could still do a similar "fold out" animation...

maybe the main section displayed firstand when they mouse over one of them a fishing rod shoots up and casts and the menu selections are hanging from the line

just a thought because of the outdoorsmen thing

I wouldnt be able to get it to look unique. It would still look like xbox

its not exactly a fishing site... more like a woodsy type thing. I'll post what i have so far.

for this i would suggest marroon+red or coffee or military green!!

ur choice of navy is also a good choice, but try this too and ask for ur customer view too!

    My 2 pence.....

I take it you're doing it all in flash... With that kind of background, I'd go for a very simple menu going across the top with dropdowns for each category in the menu. Colours? That's a bit tricky, without going to bland try using pastel colours as these will keep the natural feel, mainly greens, blues and mild browns. Personally I wouldn't make the menu too outstanding, after all, people are there for the content not to look at the nav system.

I generally leave the nav system until last to make sure that it doesn't clash with any of the content in the site.

maybe you're going about it the wrong way...

I found that my best ideas are inspired by others work. I usually get my inspiration from the techno/electronic music section of my local music store. Those people have awesome graphics. Or you could check out places like http://www.coolhomepages.com or http://www.cwd.dk . They're a repository of site designs catigorized for your inspirational pleasure. No matter what, be open to new ideas. In my experience, (not to say that I have alot) inspiration seemed to come a bit easier when I had no idea what to do. Either way good luck.

How about something with a compass or a topographical map(you know the one's with rings marking elevation)?

I really like the compass idea. There is so much you can do with that. I am not real familiar with your style and how busy you like to get in your design. You can put a stream on the background also and link your navagation through there some how. Just something to maybe help.
    Good Luck
