Theres a little tutorial @ coolhomepages.com about kerning... I enjoyed reading it and would recomend it (it's very short). - and - proper kerning makes all the differance in the world!

Well of course there are many great Typographic designers out there, and from various schools of design.
For the deconstructivists there are people like David Carson and Neville Brody. (You should be able to fine numerous books by both of them at Amazon)
More traditional typographic design doesn't have the same 'rock star' image, so there are less 'names' out there.
By the way, Neville Brody's company was the one responsible for Macromedia's new look, and all those flashy start-up graphics.
