    is ther any way of using the tint, colour settings to create a greyscael version of a symbol cretaed uing the flash drawing tools (i.e. not a photo), or do you have to create another version of a symbol or shape?

    No - you can individually tweak keyframes with the tint colour effect, but it won't create a true grayscale - colour transition.
