    3ds max is the best....If you're looking for a free util,
    then I would suggest POVray (that's short for Persistence of vision raytracer) http://www.povray.org .... and Moray as the front end....Its pretty limited though...bu the light effects are phenomenal.
    Or you could get a shareware util like Amapi or Bryce and try it out and get the...er....registration details

    I agree with RazoRmedia on this one- The Blender is hands down the best free 3D Utility out there.

    NAN has made its own Blender Plug-In for the Web and is making its own Standalone 3D Player. Plus it outputs to several formats that can be used by in SWF Authoring tools if your final desired output is Flash.
