I need to be able to do a soft mask that moves across an image... I have seen it done before but havn't been able to figure it out yet. I've tried using a png as the mask but it still just gives me a solid outline. Can anyone help?

there are two ways I would attempt:

    1. Make a, say, 50% transparency mask and use it 5 times- offsetting it by a pixel in up, down, left, right directions. This will feather your edge.

    2. If it is a simple shape you may be able to get the gradient tool to make the mask go from opaque to transparent. Use this for shapes like circeles and squares.

    any help?

... i meant to say also:

I don't think you can use bitmaps as masks unless you trace the bitmap.
