I'm looking at getting a new system that will be awesome enough for web, sound and graphic design but I'm not really sure which way to go now that the P4s have come out.

    I was considering getting a dual PIII 1G system or a Single P4 1.7G

Anyone got any suggestions on which would be the better way to go.

    Thanks Heaps.

most apps are actually not multi-threaded... so, your apps will not correctly utilize the dual processors. that also means that you are locked into the Pro versions of Win2k or WinXP.

now, with that in mind, I have dually 933 P3's, dually 733 P3 Xeons, and an 1.4ghz Athlon and a 1.0ghz Duron... anyway, I don't have, at home, a P4, but I would say that dual P3's are the way to go.

but... why not go dual AthlonMP instead?

I have no problem using Win2k or XP as I already use Win2K and am very happy with it.

As for the Athlon thing, I have heard of problems with incompatibility with software packages runnning of AMD. So I guess I was going to try and stick with what I knew to be reliable hardware.

I would go with the dual p3 if your hardware/software utilizes it.. i have heard the current p4 architecture is not as good as the old p3..

    incompability? name one.

I run everything from Max Payne to 3D Studio MAX to Photoshop to Visual Studio... and not one issue with my Athlon. I'm a freelance consultant, and I even run multiple OS's on my Athlon... Linux, FreeBSD, Win2K, WinXP, and BeOS... not one issue with any program.

well, maybe except the ones I have to write, and those just don't work on ANY machine

sounds like you've made up your mind. go with the P4.

I suppose Dual PIII with 512MB Ram and a Dual Monitor AGP card should do the trick ya reckon.

I couldn't name one myself. I have only been told of such by others.

today, a fellow MCSE was telling me that he saw a mac running dual g4's running 2800mhz... that's what he said.

    sad thing, I'm not joking...

seriously, a lot of people spread a lot of rumors, and you're free to believe whichever you wish. I have experience with every chipset for Athlon and Intel, and compatibility is pretty much the same across the board.

I will say this. I said go with the p4 for one simple reason. It is, at this moment, not as optimized for the code of major applications as the p3 seems to be. however, future versions of applications will be optimized to use the radically different p4 core. right now, it's almost laughable that a 1ghz p3 can almost keep pace with a 1.5ghz p4. a 1.4ghz athlon can flat out outrun a 2.0ghz p4 in most tasks.

either way, good luck on your decision.

i have a p4 1.7ghz 256mb pc800 rd ram, and its fast! but i dont notice that much difference when using progs, as gerbick said, we have to wait for software to come out that have been developed to take advantage of what the p4 has. other than that i havent had any problems, just get a good os! i had win me on preloaded on it, and i had on average about 3 errors per day, i now have win2k pro sp2 and it is dreamlike!
