Stupid question time..

How do I use downloaded fonts for text effects?

I downloaded True Type fonts that I would like to use, but never having done this before, I find now I am at a loss on how to use them?

Help appreciated, with instructions if possible.

If they are in a zip first unzip them into a temporary directory then click on START and then Control Panel. You'll see FONTS listed click on that. You will get an explorer type window. Click on File then Install new fonts follow the prompts. When installed you can delete the files in the temp directory.
