    resolved

i'm sure an oldie, but bear with me...

what i've got is a GIF image that i'd like to utilize in my Flash movie. it looks fine in Photoshop when i'm Saving it to Web, even with the right transparency Matte colour. however, when i view the exported swf, the edges of my bitmap image are dark and crappy.

have a look at http://www.freakden.com/second to see what i mean...
(it's the unmistakable image of the young lad and the beer - yours truly)

    can anyone help?

Use a BMP rather than a GIF.
    That should do wonders.

and that would be a PNG in a MAC environment, correct?

png gif jpg are all different types of bitmap, bmp is just an uncompressed file.

    png's are always best

yes... png is the best format and you can optimize the image to reduce that image size down....

sorry, now i'm confused. i'm being told the PNG's are the best for foto optimization and good for avoiding that lovely jagged bitmap look, yet i'm also being told that PNG's aren't widely supported.

is there a photoshop/flash sensai out there?

you said that you wanted to use an image in flash...

the png format is supported in flash and looks great...

aversion stated that many "browsers" don't support the format in response to you saying that "so are hi-rez photo's best saved as PNG's when they're to be used on the web?" -- aversion is correct if you mean on the web-- on your html web page for example... this has nothing to do with flash's capability of handling a png file...

it doesnt matter what format u pull ur inage into flahs as, it always gets exported as a jpg so who cares what format browsers support.
also the newer versions of browsers support all these formats, so stuff the 5% or so people that dont have the latest browsers, dont compromise ur site for the sake of a small percentage of people.
