Thread: the usual blurry display - bitmap fonts

  1. #1
I'm using this piuxel based, very tiny (but cool!) font from http://www.miniml.com. It must be placed on a whole pixel in the MC, the nthe root, etc... Anyway, it looks fine when I test it locally, but when I upload it, from the browser it looks like crap. It's driving me mad!!! I've read the tutorials, followed the rules for these tiny bitmap fonts, but it don't work.
You can view my problem at:

How is it so clear on other sites? (check out http://www.theory7.com)

    Please help!!!!!

there might be a transform on your text field. try modify -> transform -> remove transform.

    hope this helps.

thanks but nothing seems to work

I'm using the font hooge. This is everything I've done:
font is a symbol, symbol is on 0,0.
on the stage, symbol is on 0,0
in character, size 8, 0 kern
in paragraph, everything set to 0.
    text options, static text.
    no transform.

test scene, blurry. Just as an example check out miniml.com - they're so smooth! I don't get it.
Is there some fundamental setting I'm missing? He even has a little instruction manual in what to check for, and I've done it all. I'm even willing to send someone a very simple .flla to look at what I've done.
    Oh well....

    Thanks for any tips.

and it is also blurry when you view the .swf in a browser?

    I can't believe you're helping me...

Yes, that was part of the problem, when testing, it looked one way in the flash player, sometimes fine - then really bad in the browser.

But I think I just figured it out - when I publish, the movie was not displaying at the correct size. In the flash player, at 100% it was blurry, but scaling it down cleared it up. So I think it is a problem of displaying (browser or player) at the correct scale. And by default at 100% it seems to be blurry. Any ideas on tweaking the dimensions it's published at?

Thanks... I love this flahkit board...

    vectorpatrol,
I'm having the exact same problem. I'm using hooge 05_55 font and is just as blurry as your. I downloaded it from the same site you did and followed the same instructions. you'r not the onlyone experiencing difficulties. The funny thing is that on the main stage... they look clear and clean, but when I publish the .fla... BLURRY FONTS!

    Why, why, why, why???

    what the....

Naturally I view it at 100%, i'm not that stupid! But seriously, nothing seems to work, this is strange. I don;t want others to have difficulty but at least I know now it's not just me since you're having similar problems.

I have a theory that it could be this: movie clips inside of movie clips inside of movie clips... seems to mess it up, If I put some text in hooge just on the stage in the main timeline, it's beautifully sharp and crisp - no problems. No idea how to fix it though...

    Somebody help!!!!

    peace out...

I found a quick fix... if you can call it that. I converted everything that was in that font into a gif file. I know it sounds like a pain in the a$$ but it worked.

    Check it out:

Another thing that you can try is go to http://www.theory7.com and download thier free source code file. among all the stuff that they give you... he has a brief tutorial on how to make the pixel font crips. Perhaps he mentions something in there that you are missing.

    Good Luch!

    Smile GOT IT!!!!

    Damaris,

I fixed the problem - at least some part of it. I suspected it had to do with the export size of the swf. Make sure when you publish, in the html tab, "Dimensions" is set to the exact pixel size of the .swf, and down below - this is the importnat part - make sure "Scale" is set to "exact fit."

Then, you have to actually view the .swf through the exported html file and in the browser. If you're just testing the scene quickly, you'll still get the blur though.

    Worked for me,
    good luck
