have any programs come out that allow you to compress film footage enough to put in a flash movie?
I remember hearing about a program called vid2flash that came out for the pc- is there anything for macs?

The most well known application to convert video to swf is WildformFlix. If you want to know more about it, just go on the flashkit board dedicated to that application !
But, there's another way to import a video file in Flash. Just use an application as Adobe Premiere, open your Video, and export it as an image sequence (tiff, pict, or gif... as you prefer...). Then in Flash, just import the first image of this sequence, and Flash will ask you if you want to import all the other pictures.
