can you import materials (think it can be done in 3d studio max?) that you make yourself in lets say Photoshop? eg. Rust, Gold, Metal etc.

Swift has no direct support for import or rendering of materials. You can 'fake' some material effects using masking - several examples have been presented. I think DK and Triadis have .fla's you can download?
One or two other examples have been presented - I'm sure a tutorial exists somewhere.
If you're talking strictly about MAX, yes, you can import and apply your own materials.
