Apparantly this is VERY contoversial!!! - my original post was deleted before I found an answer. Please excuse me for asking again...

I say the .swf extension stands for "shockwave flash". My friend says it stands for "small web file". Please settle this little issue.

    Thank you all again.

I don't think the original thread got deleted but rather just burried durring the Reply to Post bug that plagued FK a little while ago.

Anyhow, When Macromedia bought Future Splash and renamed it Flash they made the file format (then it was SPL) a Director plug-in. As all of the other Director Plug-Ins were dying of SWF continued to gain popularity. Now the two formats are more or less seperate.

interesting... i took a class for dreamweaver at my university recently and the instructor said it used to stand for shockwave flash... but due to some sort of controversy it now stands for small web file.

    hmmm...

    from wildform.com:

    SWF

SWF is the file format for Macromedia Flash files. Originally developed by a company called FutureSplash, SWF (small web file) and Flash was purchased by Macromedia. Currently, Macromedia is on version 5 of this format.

ah, so it is a controversy still.
I wasn't aware of the history behind the naming at all and it looks to me now like Small Web File might be in the lead.

and mac....why would it offend you that someone is ignorant of a file format meaning, LOL.

No, Wildform is wrong which does not surprise me as they have also stated that only Live Motion and Flash can utilize the Load Movie Action and if I'm not mistaken both KM 1.0, Flare 1.0, and SWiSH 1.0 all shipped with this action.

    Here is some proof: http://web.archive.org/web/199704121...oftware/flash/

and more proof- the original 1998 Document that put the SWF format into an Open Standard:

    http://web.archive.org/web/199812020...ash/open/spec/

    http://web.archive.org/web/199902251...whitepaper.rtf

    and

If you want further Proof read the Liscense for developers of SWF tools- They Force them to Identify the SWF Format as Shockwave Flash. The current Liscense is here:

    http://www.macromedia.com/software/f...pen/licensing/
    and specifically here:

    http://www.macromedia.com/software/f.../license2.html

With the V 5 version they have reduced the requirements to just calling it Macromedia Flash (SWF)

I expect that Bill is in the process of changing his footer to comply with the guidelines, I did email him recently to discuss his footer size and he assured me it would be changed soon.
