change scene bg color

I'd really like to know if there's a way to changes the scenes' background color. For ex:
scene #1 with bg color white, and scene#2 black. That way I could jump from one scene to another without having to resort to a square slab that would otherwise take up space. I tried it, but it changes the bg for the whole movie.

I would do it by setting the movie bg colour to white so scene #1 looks okay, then in scene #2 just put a "big rectangle slab" graphic symbol, coloured black, in a layer behind everything else. There shouldn't be any problems with that.
