if your browser isn't set up to download sit files (instead of open them) control click on the link to the file and choose the "Download link to disk" or something similar from the pop up menu.

ok, i checked out the site you were trying to download from. The reason the option doesn't appear is because that bit of the site is Flash.
You should be able to normally click on a link and IE will download it.
If this does not happen it is because IE isn't set up to recognise sit files as ones to download.

Open IE preferences, choose File Helpers from the list (under Recieving Files).
Click the word "Extension" at the top of the window to list the file types by extension,
Scroll down until you find .sit in the list, (or until you get to where it should be and find it's not there).
If the .sit extension is there, click change, otherwise click add.
In the fields you should have:

    Description: Stuffit Archive
    Extension: .sit
    Mime Type: application/x-stuffit

Next, in the file type section, click browse and find your copy of stuffit expander.
Now choose SITD from the file type list.
The encoding should be Binary Data, and you should also check map incoming and map outgoing.

Choose your destination folder for the downloaded files.

Under Handling, choose post-process with application.

    That should be all.

Right, I have changed the way the .sit files and .zip files save down onto your desktop. I have now put the download buttons into dreamweaver and I now have the option of ctrl click to download Mac version, this now downloads fine, but the .sit file converts itself to a txt file on my desktop and I have to drag it onto stuffit to extract the file, I don't want to do this I want to either be able to double click on the icon which will then extract the file or for it to self extract(.sea)like a .zip.
    Any suggestions on this.??

This should happen, rebuild your desktop:

restart the computer and hold down apple+option until you are asked if you want to rebuild the desktop.
    Click Yes.
