This command will do what again,

    $rmode$
    ripple

I'm trying to do a water ripling effect on a semi-transparent layer above a bit map.

    Sorta like this http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Speci...-5/index.shtml

and was wondering if that command might help?

It is only used for importing text effects and tells the software how to do font and font size replacement in the text effects template file.

    Okay,

do you have any ideas on how to duplicate that effect?

Maybe use morph, and adjust by hand each the points to create that irregular pattern water has, then morph between frames to create a smooth transition.

    Nope,

When you try to morph a gradiant to a bitmap filled shape it crashes the program.

I did get KoolMOveas to fade out a bitmap by accident attempting this but it will not export.

I also tried a transparant shape over the bitmap and although I did achieve some splashes, The refraction wasn't there.
