Le Tissier bows out in style
Matt Le Tissier bid an emotional farewell in his testimonial game at St Mary's, as a Southampton side were held to a 9-9 draw by an England XI.
Paul Gascoigne, John Barnes, Alan Shearer, Stuart Pearce, Ian Wright, Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle, Neil Ruddock and Jamie Redknapp all appeared in the game, whilst the entertaining and light-hearted contest was refereed by Le Tissier's brother, Mark, who is a qualified match official. His other brothers, Carl and Kevin, also featured in the game.
Le Tissier, who stands to make around £500,000 tax free from the testimonial in front of almost 32,000 fans, played for the England representative side in the first half, before joining his Saints team-mates past and present for the second period.
The mercurial star inevitably found the net in front of his adoring fans, running through on goal to slot past Dave Beasant on 57 minutes, and he produced a string of long-range efforts that recalled his many spectacular strikes during 16 years at the club.
However, the 33-year-old Saints legend was arguably upstaged by his ten-year-old son, Mitchell, who came on for the last four minutes of the game and scored five!
The night ended with a screening of Le Tissier's greatest goals and an emotional 'thank you' speech from the man himself.

no, it's called football. Nobody apart from the Americans calls it "soccer"

Actually, it's referred to as soccer a lot here too
Good to see the old man get a testimonial, he deserves it a lot more than someone like Nial Quinn! For so many years he was the only good thing about the Saints, probably was the main reason they managed to avoid the drop so often.

Yeah, Pahars and Beattie are a good pairing up front. Not sure who else is worthwhile there anymore though.

Mrs Rabbit
It's definately football, not soccer. What you americans call football is just rugby with padding, wimps

Former Employee of Satan
A brilliant player in his day. He saved Southampton so many times.

It should be called football. How many times a game do American Football players use their feet on the ball?
