    Trying to figure out how to get one textbox for text input that will then go into a series of boxes.

    As for a family tree:
    The input box is where the user types the names--let's say limited to 22 characters and spaces
    Then they click a submit button and the text they typed is copied into one of the boxes of the pedigree.

    The input box goes sequentially through the recipient boxes until all boxes are filled.
    Then the user clicks "create pedigree" and either an html page is launched that shows the pedigree formatted into tables or a movie is launched that displays the pedigree without the submit buttons and without the text in the boxes being editable.

    I don't even know if 3DFA is capable of that?
    Suggestions? Action scripting type stuff is new for me.

    Sure Lil!
    Make sure you are in "Advanced mode"
    In the actions create two varibles
    count=1
    maxcount=however many boxes you need.

    When you create an editbox make sure you assign it a variable like p1 then p2 etc

    then make the entry editbox with a varible like entry

    in your button action put a javascrip with

    if (count==1){p1=entry}
    if (count==2){p2=entry}
    if (count==3){p3=entry}

    if (count<maxcount){

    count=count+1
    }
    else{
    count=1
    }
    entry=""

    You could also use the switch statment if you prefer.

    I have uploaded work in progress at
    http://qhtimes.com/flash/pedigree.html -
    I included on the page a link to my pedigree.timeline
    3DFA file if you care to download it for a look.
    I THINK I included your javascript suggestion correctly, not sure. The movie doesn't "do" anything yet. What should I do next?

    Lil, a couple of things. One use make it a movie not a timeline. 3dfa works best as movie files that's it's strength..... Second you don't want it to loop, so at the top change it from loop to stop.

    Now the problem is that the enter key is not working from "inside" the editbox. You need to put the javascript code into a button. Also you didn't change the numbers in each line you stopped at if count==3 after that they all said if count==3.

    Finally I think this is the wrong approach for what you want to do. Wouldn't it be better and easier to let the user enter the data in each box seperatly?

    As for what to do next you have the variables you just hide this stuff and show the information any way you want. As for saving the data, you need to use a database of some sort on your server, and unless you are familar with that there is quite a bit to learn there. But if you do accessing it via 3dfa is not really very hard. Do a search in the forum it's been discussed in detail.

    Looks like your son might be able to help, his stuff looked pretty good.
