    A few times I have often needed this, just to give some more detials, would it be possible for the thread author to do so?

    yes 'edit thread' with the other admin options in the bottom right corner, only for thread starters and mods

    On the same token, why can't we view our own IP adresses? (on the IP: Logged link.) Not a big deal, just wondering how that works.

    If you started the thread, under "admin options" you can close it through the "open/close thread" link. Besides for you closing your own thread, the Mods of that forum, supermods (for any forum) and the admin can also.
