I'm finding it pretty hard to work small myself, but like Ed said, it's a good challenge.

Both of these are great, but scaled down they lose alot. Have you tried re-building them at a smaller size(as opposed to scaling them)? Also try using a line where you might normally use a fill, and increase the line width some. Just a few thoughts.

Another thing I have noticed, at a smaller size you can get by with using far less frames than you normally would(I may be wrong but I think everything I've uploaded is a simple 2 frame animation).

    Hi again,

I've been spending my time coming up with a couple of character designs too.

I tried to make one of MrJosephs badguys smaller. It looks ok in preview but something nasty happens when exported. Maybe one of you gurus can see what I've done wrong.

Anyway, http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/chars1.movie is where you'll find the movie.

I haven't animated anything except for Insaneman as this was fairly easy for me to do

Now back to making the animations happen....

    Cheers,
    Ed

    Test

    Hi! Guys
I need your concept, this character makes with two 16x16 bitmaps , and four frames to obtain a bounce effect Its possible to use bitmaps or this could increase the movie size.

    Bitmaps

    Hello MrJoseph,

I think this looks fine. Using bitmaps is a good idea. I downloaded the movie source but the images weren't there and they also weren't in the zip file either. Oh well.

I've been busy putting a playfield together and animating just our hero. I'm having some 'technical' difficulty at the moment but I will have a demo ready to show all of you before I go to bed tonight

Thank you all for your patience.

    Cheers,
    Ed

    Here it is....mostly

    Hi everyone,

Well I guess I've kept you all in suspense long enough.

There are still a couple of things to iron out in the code including the possibility of there being a little problem with the javascript switch() statement. A little more testing will identify if it is a bug or not.

Anyway, for the moment please ignore the slight shaking effect you may sometimes see (this is one of the features of the program that needs to be looked at). This is caused when you try to direct our hero into a wall.

I've left the two lifeless figures in there so you can see what the sizes of other characters may look like in the end game.

I have also borrowed the 'blue print's of the original game which took me a number of hours to complete but it looks pretty good I think. As a result of doing this I have resized the movie to be in proportion to the original game.

Use the cursor keys to move InsaneMan around the playfield. You can't go through walls and when he gets to the end of a stretch he'll stop.

You can view the results here
    http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/insaneman.html

    and get the source here
    http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/insaneman.movie

Please let me know what you all think and make any suggestions as to speed/playfield (walls)/etc.

Also, I've found that if our hero goes over the deformed badguy the browser crashes. I'm not sure why but suspect that it may have something to do with the fact that the badguy is deformed in the first place.

I'll continue to work on the code for the moment.

    How are animations coming along?

We also need movies or something for the game intro, game end, high-score keeping (probably for the session only), maybe even a demo of the game playing???, sounds etc. etc. Volunteers! We need a volunteer for these items!!! C'mon gang!!

    For the moment .....
    Cheers,
    Ed

I may be able to create an intro, but cannot post it on the web (no space). If you could tell me how... or I could email it to someone.

    Hi ajcompany,

Go for it! e-mail is an option but we can worry about that later. I'm not sure who's e-mail to use. Mine is kusco@flash-fx.com if you want to send it there.

I also think we need to have a credits screen where we can list all those that have contributed. We should also include Best Boy, Camera Assistant, Costume Designer etc.

    Cheers,
    Ed

    Wow,
    Things have changed a bit........

I noticed in a previous post it was mentioned that standard frame animations where going to be a problem(very creative way of using a chooser as a work-around).

You have access to everything I've done so far. If I need to make changes let me know what and where, and I'll get on it.

If anyone is planning on doing some animations/graphics, speak up now, or I'll be doing my best to knock out the rest this evening(theres a basic list somewhere in this thread).

Ed on your re-make of Josephs bad guy there's a bad line on the right horn, on export 3dfa is assuming the line is closed inside out(hence the long line shooting off the side), I've seen it before. You can usually redraw the offending part and this will fix it. I'll take another look at it later this evening.

    Hi Jason,

The use of a Chooser inside a Layer was YOUR idea I just borrowed it from your movie899.

Thanks for finding the bug in the graphic. If you want to have a go at fixing that then by all means go for it. Is it not closed off because I didn't close it off??

In my previous postings I mentioned that the browser will crash when our hero touches the deformed badguy. I've just checked this on a machine using IE6 and Flash-6 and everyone went through smoothly. I'll have to upgrade to version 6 of both now

    Cheers,
    Ed

    Hi all,

I've updated the game to include the dots, power pills and a bit of sound. I've been a bit cheeky and borrowed the original sounds until we can come up with something of our own.

I fixed the problem where InsaneMan would shake about when you tried to move him sideways into a wall instead of into an open area. I have also built into the game a method where you can press a cursor key to turn into a corner in advance.

    The score kinda works too.

Jason: the graphics so far are great. Have a look at the dots as I think they may be a bit too big??? I don't know, what are your thoughts?

ajcompany: do you need anything to get started on the opening screen/s? What do you think about having the game go into a demo of sorts? eg. something that plays back the same section of the game over and over like some games do.

MrJoseph: how are your animations coming along? so far your badbuys look really good we just need them smaller

Bret: was it you that said you had some sounds?? there's so many posts now....

    Here is the webpage
    http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/insaneman.html

    The movie source
    http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/insaneman.movie

    and sound files
    http://www.flash-fx.com/3dfa/insaneman/insaneman.zip

Which animation are we using for InsaneMan? I've used this one until we had something definite.

The next thing I'll try to tackle is the AI for the badguys. My thoughts are that we don't want them to simply home in on us otherwise we won't stand a chance. I was thinking more like making them roam the corridoors and when you are in their line of sight and heading in your direction then they will follow you until you lose them around a corner.

Does this sound ok? Does anyone know of a better/easier method?

    Cheers,
    Ed

    ...more

    Hi again,

I forgot to mention that I tried to clone the layer containing the chooser element for InsaneMan. I can't get the animation to work when I do this.

As a result the dots appear over the top of InsaneMan and will probably do the same thing with the badguys.

Does anyone have suggestions on how we can resolve this? The only thing that I can think of is to not animate the badguys which will allow us to clone them and make them appear on top of the dots. But, this wouldn't look as nice.

    Bret? Any thoughts on this?

    Cheers,
    Ed

Seems Clones are not at the top. Hmmm Cannot think of anything off the top of my head but will give it some thought. You guys have been doing so much I've been just watching with interest.

    .............sounds:

    http://www.deadyeti.com/insaneman/iman_snds.zip (3 meg file)

I don't have a 'game over" or an 'intro' sound yet, but I'll get them soon.

I do have a 30 second loop for the credits, but it's not included in the zip file due to the fact tht it's a pretty large file. If anyone needs it, let me know an email address that can recieve a 5 meg file.

Ed, I'll upload a smaller 'dot' within the hour. I noticed you used the flashing pills. Do I need to makes the fruits flashing as well? Whats the status of bad guys?
