    Story problem time:

A family member of mine was sick in a Spanish Hospital for two days.

Her bill came to 5.050,23 .

She had paid 1.502,53 already and it has already been deducted. She was billed for the rest.

So, the question is how much in US funds is 5.050,23 .?

The letter the hospital sent has garbage characters around the amounts, confusing...also, no one there speaks English..not their attornies nor their account folks..so this is getting into the ridiculous realm at this point. They keep calling her in Spanish..knowing full well she doesn't speak it...

I tried a couple currency converters, but wasn't sure whether I was supposed to be calculating Euro's or ??

    Thoughts?

Spain used to use pesetas (i think) but all of europe is Euro based now (except us merry englishmen).

I always use ft.com for currency conversions, thers a link somewhere on their home page I think

Sorry to hear about your relative, I would STRONGLY recomend travel insurance to everyone or, if you're from the UK make sure you get an E111 form so your medical bills will be covered.

Thanks..I tried some converters...but am not sure about the "." in the number..

So would that be more like "5,000" pesetas? 5.050 is only .39 cents...

sorry didn't see that part the first time.
In which case, I have no idea sorry, it may be a quirk of the euro so you'll need to wait until a euro using person replies!!

is the symbol for the euro

the decimal points and the commas are the wrong way round

    5,050.23 Euros = 4,643.94 USD

    1,502.53 Euros = 1,381.61 USD

    meaning your friend still owes

    3547.70 Euros or 3262.33 USD

    Hope this helps

    Perfect..thanks...

Funny thing is...their attorney keeps sending this funny letter to us which obviously used some sort of translation software...

"Pleased to be amount their immediate EEUU funds to our account."

    Crazy...
