text as full image for button

is it my imagination, or is there some way to make a text button a complete image instead of just lines? i'm using text (the word "about") as a button. when i roll on the lines of the text, the button works. when i roll off a line, it doesn't. for example when the mouse is inside the "o", the btn rolls back to an up state.

does anyone know how to fix this?

draw a square,convert to symbol,put symbol on layer beneath text,modify instance,alpha=100%

this works fine as a work around, it's what i did anyway. but i thought there was some way of converting text to a solid area? maybe i DID dream it!
