    how do you make it go to a specific frame when you click it?
    and what does the "hit" state do?

    click on the button
    then in the actions panel, choose actions, movie control, gotoandstop or gotoandplay, and specify the number or (label) of the frame you need.

    The hit state is where your button is active...if it is an obscure shape or text only...stuff like that. It basically lets you define the area in which the button is clickable.
