personal site needs complete overhaul

i want to redesign the site with a different style and look, and was wondering if anybody has any ideas.

i was kind-of thinking about a dark and grungy look to it, but i am willing to accept thoughts and comments about anything that you fell would look right

my "brief"

it is my personal website that has games and downloadable stuff on, and will soon have pictures from my digicam (yay). the main site needs to be small because most people look at it on a school network.

Hi just looked at the old site, use some colour !
eg show small versions of the screensavers and wallpaper
also take of the shaolin section, unless u are going to make it more interesting

the old navigation is ok i suppose but look around and u will see much better stuff out there

post a link for comments when u have it started, i'd be interested to see what u do

and i might take off the shaolin section (i was gonna make a big thing of it, but never got round to it.)

do you have any suggestions for the style of the site, and use of colour?

i was kind off thinking of a subway-style navigation, but its been hard getting ideas lately (when is it easy?)

btw black phoenix, i like your footer, is there a site to go with it, or is that it?

i really like the font on your footer (any where i can download it?).

Hi, i just looked through my fonts (not an easy task) cant find the name but i'll post it next time i see it

(the one i'm using now is "ion")

lots of (eeek) pop ups clean (but v annoying)

u in the uk, if so look at the underground map use the colours as themes eg "contact line" could be red

look at some rail network maps they have cool shapes

just try to get some colour in there, mb pick a theme

mb make it harder than u can do so u have to learn as u go

i was thinking of making my site a bit like the main navigation on http://www.retroactiv.com , but i now like the idea of doing a map style navigation.

keeping in style of tube maps, i will keep the background white, but have different coloured "railway lines" for the navigation.

i like the idea of making it harder then i can do so i learn, i havnt learnt anything new with flash for a long time (still working with v5, GRR), so i will experiment with things.

ps, i liked your old signiature, i think coz of the font!

do you know any good image site where i can get pics of urban subways, etc for free.

i want to take pictures of places, but i cant get anywhere for a while (not old enough to drive!!)

nice subways on this one but i would mb look at some shots then take my own based on there work (the getty one i think u have to pay for)

get the bus down there, and shoot your own its the best way

i have put my work on there to start with. i have decided not to go with a tube-map style site, but i think i will still use the line ideas.

i made the "graffiti" on fireworks, and then imported the bitmaps into flash and traced bitmaps. what do you think of them? i will probably still have a picture of a subway for the navigation.

what u have started with doesn't scream subways at me, the subways in the uk are tiled (cream colour) mb use a graffiti font there is one called graffiti (free)

take loads of shots on friday plenty 2 choose from

i see the navigation from a tube ticket (dont ask me why)

or mb the machine u buy the tickets from "select your destination"

someone really big had the strap line "where do u want to go today" mb use that as a theme but dont copy it totally

or mb go mad and be whacky

in the uk a voice says mind the gap (when u get off the tube) mb have a character fall down the gap and start from there, lots of angles on this one

think of the key words eg "destination" "arrival"

u need to think what you are trying to get across to ppl, eg if u are doing a site for old people the buttons should be big and easy 2 read

if the sites about graffiti mb have a spray can, when u press the nozzle it sprays out the buttons, cool navigation ?

post some shots on the "picture exchange" when u get back

no, i havent added the bits that make it "subway" yet. i am gonna take loads of pics of the metro on friday and see what i can do with them.

i like the idea of making the navigation the ticket machines, they have really cool ones on the metro (or at least i like the look of em.)

my site is aimed at my kind of age range (15ish),and they know what they are doing with computers, so i could go for a more "exotic" navigation system, but i will get bad comments whatever i do (cant please em all).

what do you think about the placement of the title, and the red things (meant to be graffiti).

i will post some images on that thread, they really have nice images there, and its great to see people giving away images (instead of them charging £200 or whatever)

hi, the friday image collecting trip didnt really go well.

i took a few pics, and then realized the battery was low on my digicam!

the pics that i did take werent very good at all, and i am now stuck for an idea for the navigation system for the site.

i have kinda given up on the subway style idea, and will just go for any ideas that fit the feel of the site.

ne ideas for the navigation would be great.

This is my view on sites, start with a great idea

then make it work, u have such a source of knowledge here within the boards, there are artists coders etc

dont just go for second best, get your batteries charged up and get down there, if the pixs are no good think why and go there again, stay with it (u will learn more about photography)

all the good sites were not made overnight, mb have a break from it and then power back into it

if u dont your site will just be another site....

if your site is blinding and u struggle to get it done, u will learn the process of working which u can apply to clients sites, trust me u will learn so much from trying

stay with it!!

at least ive made some progress!

yeah, i think i will take more photos. i like the site as is it at the moment, i just need the inspiration for that great, revolutionary navigation system that makes me a "web-god" (yeah right)
