Sometimes I notice I can't swap a movie symbol. I notice when I can't, there is a black dot next to the name of the symbol when I wish to swap.

Could someone please tell me how to get around this?

In that window with the black dot, double click on the symbol you want to swap the symbol with. I.E.
If you have a symbol named "mc1" and you want to swap it for "mc2", In the window "mc1" will be the one with the black dot next to it indicating the selection on the stage.
double click on "mc2" and it will now have a black dot next to it and it will now appear in the place of "mc1" on the stage.

That is where the problem lies - normally I can swap the symbol by doing that but in some cases the movieclip remains even after I doubleclip on an alternate symbol

DOOOH - I didn't notice the properties were graphic. That is why I couldn't swap.
