I found a really good scroller in the movie section.
http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Scrip...3848/index.php
My problem is that I want to use it on a transparent drop down box so I can't have a solid mask to hide the text outside the box. If I put a mask in front of the text, I have to change the text to static which greatly decreases the speed and smoothness of the box. The nice part is that clients don't have to use Flash 6 viewers for this scroller.
I was wondering if there is a way of using actionscript to change the alpha of certain area of a layer within a movieclip - e.g. anything with an x=0, y=0 to x=50, y=50 - alpha=0% - but only effecting that particular layer or movieclip?
Thanks for the help.

I'm desperate enough to load the scrollbar as an swf if there is a way to say loadmovie("scroller.swf,x) and only show area x=0, y=0 -x=250, y=250 of that movieclip - effectively trimming the unnecessary visuals out.

You have to make the layer a movieclip, then you can change the alpha value.

Sure, anything, please let me know what to do -- I'm a newbie so I'm afraid you'll probably have to spoon feed me or send me to a tutorial link or a movie with this feature.
Thanks for responding.

An even nicer way of doing this is giving an object a gradient fill where the color goes from 100% alpha to 0% alpha. This way you can get a nice alpha transition.

You select the contents of the layer and convert it to a symbol, where you click "movieclip". Give it a name like layer_1. Then using a button you can change the alpha value, where 0 is invisible and 100 is opaque.
on(release) {
layer_1._alpha = 0;
}
