"You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft may automatically check the version of the OS Product and/or its components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or fixes to the OS Product that will be automatically downloaded to your computer,"
That looks like remote Admin to me. Basically MS can can automatically check your OS product and componets and install upgrades without your permision.
Its to much of a back door for something like lets say (ex)Palludiom or another type of DRM.
-
Griffhiggins 2.2
That's called a new feature. The new version of Critical Update checks allows for automatic installations--not scheduled instalations...something my boss has wanted for a looong time.
-
Yes but MS history of patches undoing former patches and doing things you don't want it to like breaking the <Embed> tag in MSIE 5.5 and making it so unresolved URLs get directed to MSN or even installing the Nimda Virus (To Korean Windows users) and who know what else "Say Bad DRM scheme".
The point is that you should test any patch before you install it to make sure it doesn't break anything else but this is even more dubious than that.
Its not a feature, its a backdoor for them to do anything they want to your machine.

I wouldn't touch that patch with a ten foot pole.

I'm running it. no probs. but, honestly, do your updates via the MBSA or HFNetChk - search http://msdn.microsoft.com for either utility - and you'll be pretty much at SP3 level.
otherwise, I answered this once in the past here
later

Work sucks
Not yet, but also I don't have any of the SP installed, despite having them on cover CDs on my table somewhere. I hear that SP3 makes 2000 run faster.

Running Plodding & Limping
I got SP3, big fecker it was 22MB download but it works fine, dunno why you're all so concerned about it.
Had a bit of a scare when my pc wouldn't restart properly after installation but that could have been due to a virus i had at the time which has now been killed.
If i'm honest, i'd say my pc does run quicker since i installed sp3, it definitely boots up much faster.
-
Griffhiggins 2.2
I've installed it on all of our servers. Hasn't broken anything. Works just fine.
-
Its not SP3 its that cluase in the SP3 EULA that allows MS to automatically , without telling you, to update and install new software on the machine at will. Its a back door for them to sneak a DRM on your machine. And its not even like most of us truly object to a DRM as long as it doesn't interfere with "Fair Use" but most DRM and DRM schemes do. Some will search a song and if a copyright track is not present it won't play... Well under the AHRA you have the right to make copies of music for personal home use (In return the record labels get a royalty for every piece of recording media sold)... Under the precedent set under the Betamax case you have the right to record movies for personal use. How will the DRM acount for this?
Furthermore How do they account for home recorded music. Is everyone going to have the ability to place a copyright track on something? If that is so then it breaks the DRM scheme. See this is what we are worried about not wether or not SP3 will break anything.

No it can't. You can turn off the feature if you wish.
I don't know why you get so paranoid Johnie. It's in their best interests to satisfy their customers...
If they've left a "backdoor", we'll find out real soon...privacy groups are constatly reveiwing these things for breaches.
Everyone had a cow over Windows XP Activation...they said Microsoft would abuse it...privacy group's anazlyed...and gave it a clean bill of health.
