Am I right in thinking that the MX Server is only for Windows based servers? What about Unix/Linux?

Yep, at this point it's only for Windows Server:

    Personal Edition
    Microsoft Windows
    · Macromedia Flash MX
    · Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, Windows 2000
Professional, or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6 or later
(Windows 98/ME supported for application authoring only)

    · 64 MB of free available system RAM (128 MB recommended)

    · 50 MB of available disk space

    · CD-ROM drive (Optional)

    Apple Macintosh (application authoring only):
    · Macromedia Flash MX

    · 64 MB of free available system RAM (128 MB recommended)

    · 10 MB of available disk space

    · CD-ROM drive (Optional)

    Professional Edition
    Microsoft Windows
    · Windows 2000 Server (Advanced Server recommended for multi-processor systems)
or Windows NT 4.0 Server SP6 or later
    · Pentium III 500 MHz processor or faster (dual Pentium 4 or faster
    recommended)
    · 256 MB free available system RAM (512 MB recommended)
    · 50 MB of available disk space
    · CD-ROM drive (Optional)

I'm sure that will change, but they had to start somewhere.

    I guess so then.

Hopefully Macromedia will implement the new communications server on Linux soon - I'd like to create runtime apps for my sites.

Since FlashCom needs to run on a seprate server, you could still use Flashcom on an NT server and connect it to your site on linux, the only thing living on your linux server would be the swf file.

    designers and macs

That's old school. 10 years ago you needed a MAC to do print design because most programs for print where designed for the MAC, but now that's not the case. I can go either way, but prefer the pc since 90+% of the end users are using a pc. If I was doing print I'd use a MAC, but that doesn't hold for editing, web, or 3D anymore. It's pretty much a preference thing. I've noticed though most companies develop for the pc first then maybe if they're lucky enough the company will develop a MAC version, can't blame them they are doing it based on marketing share. No flaming please :-)
