i just want to create earth like this

and you wanna know how they did it, right?

I think they created that with a 3d program
if you dont have one, the trip ends here

if you do, first find a nice picture of earth
u have to edit this picture in photoshop first, so that the land is all black, and the seas are all white.

-open the 3d prog, and pick a sphere from the objects.
-make a new texture
-add the picture of the edited earth to the texture in the alpha channel.

when you preview the scene now, u see that al that was white, is now transparant.

now go back to the material editor, and change the color to blue for example, lower the transparancy a bit, mabye add a glow if u like.

thats about it.

of cource there are harder/better ways to do it, but I hope this was enough for ya.

IMO, it was done in Photoshop:

create layer, make circle selection, fill blue.
new layer with earth texture, stretch relevant area of texture over sphere.

select sphere, and sphereize earth texture (one or more time as needed).

overlay

new layer - screen, gradient: black -> white, top -> bottom (for height of circle).
